It seems funny now to think that we put together an anthology after producing just two albums, but I think that FT was so important to us back then that we couldn’t wait to make a third album. I have a special place in my heart for the math songs - particularly “Ain’t Talkin’ Precal.” We received massive extra credit in our Discrete Math class for that song. Why? I’m not sure, since there are no math concepts actually discussed in the tune. I remember that around the time we put this album out, Theron’s parents gave us an awesome gift: Frozen Taco bumper stickers. They were so cool, with black lettering on a yellow background. I displayed mine proudly for years on my Datsun 210. Then one day, during my sophomore year in college, I walked to my car to discover a horrific act of vandalism. Someone had removed the “Frozen” from my car. I was outraged. I left the remnants of the sticker on my bumper, but somehow “Taco” just didn’t have the same pizzazz. Coincidentally, or not, I got rid of that car soon after.

I remember our collective feeling of pride when we released “The Complete Frozen Taco”. Even though it was mostly old stuff, the extra songs gave it a fresh feeling. But, I think the thing I was most proud of was that it was way over an hour of our music. Actually there are plenty of new songs: two were extra credit songs for our math classes that gave us heaps of extra points (That’s what “E.C.” stands for…“Extra Credit”). Another was a remake of “Keep Me Moving”, the original appeared on “Aftermath of a Shoeleg”, interestingly enough the older song appeared on this newer album. “The Country Song”, a fun ditty featuring a great bass line and harmonic and banjo solos, is a favorite of mine.

This version of “Phil’s Army” is a classic. It’s the remake of that song, originally appearing on the old version of “Frozen Taco II”, that was famously banned from a school dance. Last but not least is a great remake of “Cool Guys”, not surprisingly named “Cool Guys II”. This song was mainly redone because Carlos didn’t quite pull off the amazing stunt of spontaneous lyrics the way he did for “King of Rock” and “Pecans”.

Complete FT was the album where I got much more involved in the ‘production’ side of the creative process. In the past, Theron had assembled and mastered the albums this time, we worked together on getting the songs in place, and then the final finishing (which included editing the interview portion and putting the whole of the project together) fell to me. To this day, I still have the master copy of the album one of my most prized and treasured possessions. There was a definite shift here with the new songs that were recorded for the album. The math songs and some of the Edison’s Group pieces all are native to this project. They are indicative of our full shift from ‘live’ and improvised recordings to multi-tracked, alongside the full shift to ‘real’ instruments: drum machines, guitars, synthesizers. We were sounding like a real band but to me, we were also sounding less like Frozen Taco at least the FT I knew. Complete was a full turning point both mentally and artistically. It summed up what was finished and anticipated what was to come. It was the last time I felt we truly were ‘complete’ as a band. -Dave Dault, Nashville, December 2004
