Frozen Taco proudly presents their seventh album, Primordial Nostalgia. Copyright 1990 - 2005, Frozen Taco, All rights reserved. Recorded at the Bedside, Columbus, GA, December 1990. Frozen Taco is: Theron Welch and Matthew Reiss

This album is dedicated to winter.

Here’s a true Frozen Taco breakthrough album. This is the first album that Matt and I collaborated on completely. Everything worked really well for us and as such this album remains one of my top favorites. I still can clearly remember walking with Matt around the neighborhood late one night trying to decide the ordering of songs on the album. I had a sense then that this album would be a memorable one and it still remains that for me today. It’s a nice variety of fun songs, to serious ones, to a joke one, to a fun bonus instrumental. “Ingenuous Predator” is such an amazing song from a music standpoint, but much more so lyrically - they remain some of my favorites. “Sacrificed” is one of our more unique and compelling instrumentals. I really enjoy the style of songs like “Isle of Avalon” which holds true to Frozen Taco songs of old, where the music ideas are all that is known beforehand, the song was improvised as it was recorded.

Theron Welch Seattle, January 2003

Primordial Nostalgia is in many ways, Frozen Taco’s breakout album, and it remains high on my list of favorites. I typically find myself putting on Primordial Nostalgia to hear one song, and end up listening to the entire album. It forces you to keep listening.

Storm’s Apology, Druid’s Dance (which we remade for “TBC’n With Rahashee”), Isle of Avalon – all are very memorable FT compositions; I love the instrumental, Sacrificed, and I think That Darned Horse is the funniest of our humorous songs (it’s a parody of the theme to the TV series “Branded”); but the best song, the song that defines the album, is Ingenuous Predator. I was so proud of that song that I played it for anyone who would listen (and even some who wouldn’t).

Incidentally, names like Ingenuous Predator, Dutchman’s Breeches, Immaculate Constable, etc. were derived by picking random words out of Theron’s giant dictionary. We gave up the practice some time around “Myth & Man,” but who knows, maybe we’ll re-institute the random name generator for some future FT song. Admittedly, I have a hard time remembering some of our non sequitur titles (“Xihmtao”?).

Lyrics

Ingenuous Predator

Look into the wind. Ask it what it knows. A friendship drops right off the vine when the wind starts to blow.

Are the friends we have, the friends we’d like to keep? Or are they merely monuments to the feelings we find cheap?

You’re a long time friend; it will be longer still Until I have the knowledge, before I have the will.

I beseech you brother; judgment left me blind. Just give me the chance to leave the past behind.

Look into the wind. Ask it what it knows. A friendship drops right off the vine when the wind starts to blow.

when the wind starts to blow.

Mind Games

Mind games - name of the game. Play with your mind, and make it untame. Mind games - they’ll make you distraught. That’s the very reason that mind games are wrought. Mind games - they toy with your head. Mind players twist what the victim has said.

Mind games - they’ll ruin your day. Confusion abounds as you go astray. Mind games - those who enjoy use a human subject as a play toy. Mind games - what will you do, when people start playing mind games on you?

Dutchman’s Breeches

We’re in space, moving through the stars. I can hit light speed in my galaxy car.

Light speed, here we go. If I can shapes then we’re going to slow.

The Milky Way, just take a look. It’s really here, it’s not in a book.

The skyways and byways. The skyways and highways.

Weightless, I float around. I’m on a diet, lost 200 pounds.

We’re near Saturn - avoid that thing. Don’t get hit by one of its rings.

We’re in space, moving through the stars. I see the sun, don’t collide with Mars.

The skyways and byways. The skyways and highways.

I want to fly, fly through the heavens. I want to fly, fly through the heavens. Just look at me go.

We’re in space, moving through the stars. I can hit light speed in my galaxy car.

Light speed, here we go. If I can shapes then we’re going to slow.

Weightless, I float around. I’m on a diet, lost 200 pounds.

The skyways and byways. The skyways and highways.

Isle of Avalon

Oh, should I fail to find my way, I’ll use the stars, the sun by day. And if it be that I should fall, no one will be asked to hear my call.

Oh, when I come back over the glen, you will see me whole again.

Oh, as I tread the treacherous moor, I will think of Glastonbury Tor.

Now the wind and rain block my road. My hands are worn; my back is bowed.

As my mind imagines the grail, I know that somehow I’ll prevail.

Oh, should I fail to find my way, I’ll use the stars, the sun by day. And if it be that I should fall, no one will be asked to hear my call.

Storm’s Apology

I know why, you try, you try and try to capture me to make me comply. I know why.

Deep inside my heart, Lying down below Is the answer to the question I’ve been dying to know. Lying down below.

I look the other way, I see a new day. Looking at the colors I see many shades of grey. I look the other way.

Walk down a new street. Kick stones with my feet. A time will come again When we again shall meet. A time will come again.

A nightmare, a dream - illusions on a theme. Master of dreams and shadows, I dwell in deepest thoughts. Sometimes surface to bathe in light. I use the mind’s throne as my seat.

Absence of Malice

People in this world with high ideals, have no care what the majority feels. They go with their conscience, they go with their will. Their view’s not confined by their window sill.

Going overseas, I heard the call. I want to see the remnants of the Berlin Wall. Let me phone Russia, I heard of the man Who speaks of reform in a traditional land.

I heard that the Czechs have leaders moving out. I want to see what’s going on; I want to cure the doubt.

As they grow and mature Just watch for their deeds. Before you have a forest Someone’s got to plant the seeds.

Druid’s Dance

Touching the sphere. Perfection lies within. Oh, I can see the beauty; I’m denied once again.

Utopia is waiting; it’s just out of reach. If I comprehend the picture, it’s merits I can preach.

Touching the sphere. Perfection lies within. Oh, I can see the beauty; I’m denied once again.

It’s not just a road, it’s a destination. Oh why must we be held in such brutal subjugation?

Touching the sphere. I wipe clear the glass. Oh, I can see the beauty, and my dream has come to pass.

Touching the sphere. Perfection lies within. Oh, I can see the beauty; I’m denied once again.

Once again.

That Darned Horse

Branded! Branded by an unknown foe. He was branded - with nowhere to go.

He was innocent, not a charge was proved. He pled no contest; he was put in jail.

Branded! Branded by an unknown foe. He was branded - with nowhere to go.

He was an honest man; he lived a good life. Had some kids, and he had a spouse.

Branded! Branded like a newborn steer. He was branded - outcast for a year.

He had a mongoose. He named it George. He didn’t feed it, and it ran away.

Branded! Branded by an unknown foe. He was branded - with nowhere to go.

He was left in a barn. The door was locked. Mauled by a horse. He was mangled beyond recognition.

Branded! Branded by a vicious steed. Branded - he’ll need plastic surgery.

He got out of jail. Wandered around. Fell down a mineshaft, and… died.

Branded! Branded as a clumsy oaf. He was branded - like week old meatloaf.

Now you’ve heard his tale. Now you can judge. He won’t mind. He won’t bear a grudge.

Branded! Branded as a silly song. We rhymed the last verse. That’s where we went wrong…
